As the New Year begins, the gardens at Goldstone Hall Hotel will start to gently stir back into life. Set within five acres in the rolling countryside, our gardens remain a source of quiet beauty throughout winter, offering guests and visitors a rewarding reason to visit Shropshire even in the colder months.

Winter Interest in One of the Most Beautiful Gardens in Shropshire

Near the front door, the Japanese quince is already flowering — a familiar and welcome sight that has marked the changing seasons here for many years. Nearby, dogwoods planted with inspiration from the RHS Hyde Hall winter garden bring much-needed colour to the darker corners of the garden, particularly striking at sunset.

Snowdrops, primroses and early daffodils will begin to emerge, hinting at the promise of spring. Keen galanthophiles may be interested to know that we also nurture a cherished clump of Galanthus ‘Byrkley’, quietly thriving here for over 15 years.

Elsewhere, richly scented winter plants – Daphne, Mahonia and winter-flowering honeysuckle, Lonicera fragrantissima, – reward those who take time to wander, their fragrance lifting the senses on cold mornings.

Early Signs of Spring Across the Grounds

Under the roses along the walkway to the Oak Pavilion, an ever-expanding carpet of Cyclamen coum continues to establish itself, which will be joined by scilla and bluebells preparing for their March display. Around the trial vineyard, we’ve relocated nearly a thousand cyclamen and various primroses to soften the banks and extend seasonal interest.

These quieter winter months reveal the structure and design of the garden — an overlooked pleasure for visitors staying at one of the most distinctive hotels in Shropshire.

Preparing the Kitchen Garden for the Year Ahead

In the one-acre kitchen garden, preparations for the growing season are well underway. Farmyard manure is being spread generously, and along the herb walkways, alliums, early tulips (Lilac Wonder) and cowslips are already showing signs of growth.

As the Christmas season draws to a close, the gardening team is returning fully to outdoor work, having recently swapped secateurs for table moving and festive decorating during a wonderfully busy winter at the hotel.

Looking Ahead to Longer Days

As daylight slowly lengthens, the garden begins its annual transition once more. We’re keeping our fingers crossed for the echiums, which have so far weathered autumn frosts – particularly those sheltered by the house.

Here’s to a floriferous, productive year ahead and to many more moments of calm discovery in the gardens at Goldstone Hall Hotel — a place where winter, spring and everything in between are worth lingering over.

If your visiting the garden, pop in for a hot drink by the roaring fires, or book for a warming lunch or afternoon tea – call ahead to book if eating on 01630 661 202.
