March marks the beginning of meteorological spring, and while winter may still have a few surprises left, the momentum of the new season is undeniable. The shift brings a renewed sense of optimism, making it the perfect time to put winter’s plans into action.
Signs of Spring in the Goldstone Gardens
Here at Goldstone Hall Hotel, the unmistakable signs of spring are emerging. While last year’s snowdrops—planted in the green—are still in bloom near the car park, the crocuses have made a bold appearance on the terrace. Snowdrops endure cold temperatures and shade well, often drooping overnight only to stand tall again in the morning. In contrast, crocuses thrive in the sun and naturally they occur in more open habitats so the flowers are often dull coloured on the outside to camouflage them from beady eyed birds that might make a snack of the petals. There they will stay with their petals remaining tightly closed until the warmth encourages them to open, attracting pollinators.
The first early daffodils have also started brightening the Shropshire garden. Varieties such as ‘Tete a Tete’ and the native Narcissus pseudonarcissus (Lenten lily) flourish beneath the Prunus avium or wild cherry tree on the main lawn, adding a splash of yellow to the landscape.

Caring for the Lawns
The main lawn and surrounding grassy areas have received a much-needed refresh. Aerating the soil has improved drainage, relieved compaction from our many visitors, and allowed air to reach the roots. We’ve also applied a strong seaweed solution to encourage root growth and combat the moss that thrived over winter. As the weather warms, a light trim will help strengthen the grass and fill in any bare patches

Fresh, Homegrown Produce for the Goldstone Kitchen
The last of our Jerusalem artichokes are being harvested before they start their growth cycle again. Sarah, our kitchen gardener, has been carefully selecting the best tubers to send to the kitchen while reserving others for replanting. These hardy plants will soon grow six to eight feet tall, ready to be harvested next winter.
In the polytunnel, winter salads such as rocket have flourished in the growing warmth. These greens have a spicy, peppery taste, perfect for waking up the taste buds after winter. The herb walk continues to provide fresh rosemary, sage, and thyme, while red-veined sorrel is putting out new leaves that will soon be featured on the menu.
Managing the Early Spring Growing Conditions
Early spring can be challenging for plant growth, particularly in glasshouses and polytunnels. While daytime temperatures inside can soar past 20°C, nights can still dip below freezing. This fluctuation can stress young plants, as seen with our banana plants, which thrived in the warmth but suffered damage to the newly opened leaves in the cold nights.
To maintain healthy growth, we ensure proper ventilation during the day and close the polytunnel before nightfall to retain warmth. This careful balance helps prevent soil from drying out and reduces the risk of plant disease.
