Tucked away in the beautiful North Shropshire countryside, Goldstone Hall Hotel & Gardens is not only one of the most relaxing hotels in Shropshire, but also home to one of the finest restaurants in Shropshire. As the gardens burst into late summer life, there’s no better time to visit, explore, and dine.

A Summer of Extremes

After one of the driest periods since 1976, our gardens at Goldstone have faced both blessings and challenges. While the lawns are struggling under the relentless sun, the roses have never looked better. Our much-loved Super Trooper roses, with their vibrant orange blooms, are already showing a second flush of colour following careful summer pruning and feeding.

The lawns may resemble a desert, but our abundant flower borders and kitchen garden are thriving, thanks to careful watering from our own artesian well.

The Cutting Garden in Full Colour

Our first full year of a new perennial planting plan is beginning to shine. Blue and white cornflowers, sunflowers, and an array of dahlias are filling the garden with colour, texture, and life. Even tucked among the blooms are productive vegetable beds where courgettes, destined for our seasonal menus, are flowering and fruiting.

Our plot-to-plate ethos is central to everything we serve at Goldstone’s restaurant. Whether you’re enjoying afternoon tea on the terrace or a leisurely lunch, much of what’s on your plate has come directly from our one-acre kitchen garden.

From Polytunnel to Plate

The polytunnel is bursting with ripening tomatoes of every size and shape—nothing compares to the taste of a warm tomato straight from the vine. You’ll also find peppers, chillies, runner beans, and our first-ever vineyard, where Pinot Noir and Solaris vines are being carefully nurtured for future wine production.

This hands-on approach to growing ensures the freshest, tastiest ingredients feature on our menus, setting us apart as one of the most authentic restaurants near Market Drayton and restaurants near Newport.

Shaping the Garden for the Seasons Ahead

Later this month, hedge-cutting will begin once nesting birds have fledged. The striking purple beech hedge offers a dramatic contrast to the softer, wilder planting of the borders. As the garden matures, the balance between structure and softness is creating a truly stunning space to wander and relax.

Visit, Dine, and Stay

At Goldstone Hall, every visit is an opportunity to savour the seasons—whether you’re joining us for dinner, afternoon tea, or a mid-week garden lunch. We invite you to dine in the elegant orangery, the main dining room, or al fresco on the terrace when the weather allows.

For those wishing to extend their visit, our comfortable rooms offer the perfect countryside retreat, making Goldstone one of the best hotels in Shropshire for a peaceful getaway.

Wine of the Month

Our wine pick for July is Camel Valley Bacchus Dry Cornwall 2022—an English wine full of summer character and a nod to our own vineyard ambitions.

With warm wishes,
John and the Goldstone Garden Team
