Head Gardener

Meet Ross Underwood, our Head Gardener, who oversees the day-to-day management of our renowned 5-acre garden. With a passion for woody plants like magnolias, rhododendrons, azaleas, hydrangeas, and roses, as well as herbaceous plants suitable for dry gardens and propagation, Ross brings extensive horticultural expertise to Goldstone.

His journey began under RHS Vice President John Ravenscroft VMH at Bridgemere Gardens, followed by roles at prestigious institutions such as David Austin Roses and Hodnet Hall Gardens. Ross is a familiar voice on local BBC Radio Gardeners’ Question Time and serves as a Trustee at the Dorothy Clive Gardens, where he co-hosts a recurring GQT segment. Equipped with a BA & MA in History from Keele University and RHS Level III certification, Ross’s passion extends beyond gardening to exploring plants in their natural habitats, from the Himalayas to Central Asia.

Ross also dedicates his time to volunteering for various local organisations including The Shropshire Fire Service.

“I am thrilled to collaborate with our owners and colleagues across departments to uphold Goldstone’s renowned standard of excellence in gardening and guest experience.”

Kitchen Gardener

Kitchen Gardener, Sarah Smith-Roe, assists Head Gardener, Ross Underwood, in managing the 5 acre award-winning garden. In addition, Sarah oversees the development of our one-acre productive kitchen garden. Here, she cultivates a variety of fruit, vegetables, herbs and spices including heritage seeds generously provided by the Heritage Seed Library (HSL). The goal of this partnership is to revive and protect heritage and heirloom vegetable seed varieties, some of which are native to Shropshire. Sarah, who previously worked in pharmacy for 18 years, is currently pursuing RHS Level 2 certification at Ryton College.

Sarah also works closely with the kitchen team led by head chef, Evan, to ensure that fresh produce from the garden is incorporated into their culinary creations for hotel and restaurant guests to enjoy.

“I have always been passionate about gardening and growing vegetables. I used to help my father out on his allotment and always really enjoyed my time outside. I am really excited to be growing seeds as part of the HSL partnership and also being able to help extend the season of the vegetable garden here at Goldstone.”
