At Goldstone Hall, nestled in the picturesque countryside of Shropshire, we’re committed to offering our guests an unforgettable experience. Over the past few months, John, Sarah, and I have undertaken several projects to enhance our gardens, ensuring they continue to captivate and inspire.

Revamping the Upper Vegetable Garden

Our upper vegetable area has undergone a dramatic transformation. We removed the metal framework and wooden-sided raised beds, amalgamating smaller plots into a single, expansive growing space. This redesign not only enhances aesthetics but also increases productivity, offering Kitchen Gardener, Sarah, the chance to experiment with new planting schemes.

We also relocated cane and bush fruits, including loganberries, blackberries, currants, gooseberries, and raspberries. Although moving these plants might sound drastic, doing so during dormancy ensures they remain unharmed. Many woody plants, like gooseberries and herbaceous perennials, thrive after being divided and replanted into nutrient-enriched soil.

Gooseberries and raspberries will often produce new growth away from the centre leaving the middle of the plant rather barren.  A swift chop with a sharp spade will liberate the most vigorous parts which can be replanted into prepared ground enriched with a little compost, slow release fertiliser or well-rotted manure.

Now is the perfect time for pruning raspberries. For autumn-fruiting varieties, we cut back all growth to ground level, while for summer-fruiting types, we remove canes that bore fruit this year, leaving the younger canes for next year’s harvest. Down by the polytunnel the blackberries and loganberries have been planted into prepared ground and put over a new framework.

Creating a New Guest Space

Adjacent to our polytunnel, we collaborated with a local contractor to completely transform a derelict area. The remnants of a disused swimming pool were excavated and replaced with 40 tons of rich topsoil, spread with the help of a mini digger.

This new landscaped space offers a tranquil spot for guests to relax with a drink while enjoying sweeping views towards Cheswardine and its charming church tower.

Progress in the Meadow

The meadow is benefitting from earlier drainage work, with pipes leading to the brook helping to dry out the affected land. We’re already envisioning exciting developments for this area, ensuring it becomes a feature guests can enjoy for years to come.

A Seasonal Sensory Treat

On frosty mornings, there’s nothing like the warming scent of our Szechuan pepper tree. Its red peppercorns cling to the branches, offering an enticing aroma that’s well worth a stroll to the bottom of the garden.

Looking Ahead: What’s Next for Goldstone

Sarah and I are busy preparing for the next growing season. We’re working closely with John, his family, and our Head Chef to plan new, exciting crops for our award-winning restaurant. While those plans remain a secret for now, we invite you to visit and see the results of our hard work.

Goldstone Hall is more than just one of the finest Shropshire hotels—it’s a haven for garden enthusiasts, food lovers, and anyone seeking a peaceful escape. We can’t wait to welcome you back to experience the magic of our ever-evolving gardens, hotel, and restaurant.
