The Story of Goldstone Hall

A hotel 800 years in the making

The history of Goldstone Hall starts from the middle ages. A family with the name De Goldestan appear to have been on the site before 1180 and the Goldstones of Goldstone owned estates here until the 18th Century when Edward Pegg built a new house at Goldstone, on or alongside the site of the Goldstone family’s Elizabethan manor house. This (along with its additions) is the present Goldstone Hall.

Helen and Charles Ward bought the house in 1978 as a private home. In 1983, two years after Charles’ death, Goldstone Hall Hotel began. The idea came from Helen’s friend, Ruth Rae at their weekly yoga class within the Goldstone Walled Garden.

Helen Ward was the enthusiastic and driven founder knowing that Goldstone was a perfect place for great eating and drinking. She insisted in quality cooking and innovation, with in her spare time, a passion for gardening.

Today it is Helen’s son John and wife Sue with their daughters who ensure that traditional quality hospitality is contemporary and fashionable.

Meet the team

At Goldstone, we want every visit to be a special occasion and this starts with the welcome you receive on the telephone or by e-mail exchange. Our Special Occasions team takes all the attention to detail and planning to new heights of pro activeness and organisation. Joanne is in the office during the day and will always answer the phone with a cheerful voice.

Our front of house team led by Katie, are enthusiastic, delightful and professionally trained, where nothing will be too much trouble and always one step ahead of you!

We have a busy army of Housekeepers whose role is vitally important in ensuring your experience is second to none. Led by Sue, they will ensure that everything gleams and shines for you; that linen is crisp and smooth and the bedrooms are clean and comfortable.

The kitchen, under the leadership of Head Chef Liam, produces food that has been recognised by the AA at two rosette standard for over 10 years. An AA Inspector described his cooked breakfast as the best he had eaten in the previous 12 months. (Think how many he eats all in the course of duty).
